A Brief History of the Weirder Together Variety Show!
Starring Lena Dunham, Brad Pitt, Rove, Wolfmother, Spike Jonze, Russell Crowe and lots more...
You might have heard us gabbing on about the revival of the Weirder Together Variety Show on March 27 at the Great Club in Sydney… since it hasn’t existed for a while we thought we’d give you a very brief but fun history lesson on the way these fun and chaotic nights came into existence and what you can expect…
It all started when Lena Dunham tweeted about how much she loved Supersonic, the Oasis documentary. We tweeted back that one of our favorite activities ever was reading Oasis interviews out loud, one of us playing Liam, the other Noel. Lena texted us right away saying “I’m serious, let’s do this live at Largo!”
Largo at the Coronet is the legendary music/comedy venue run by our good pal Flanny, who is brave/stupid enough to allow people like us to do things like that on a stage. And so an event was born…
People bought tix with little idea of what to expect. We had some musicians covering Oasis songs (Julianna Barwick, Lisa Loeb) and lots of actors and comedians reading interviews out loud (Retta, Spike Jonze). Ione and Lena read out love letters to Noel and Liam, Brad Pitt strolled on stage to stay “Let’s do this, cunts!” and Ben led the entire cast through a a group singalong of Champagne Supernova. It was a completely bizarre success!
That night really whet our appetites for hosting weird and wonderful eclectic evenings…we next set out sights upon a Valentine’s Day celebration. Since there was already something booked for Valentine’s Day at Largo (hi Nikka Costa) we took the closest avail - Valentine’s Eve!
Such an incredible night of romance and silliness!
A highlight was Susannah Hoffs from the Bangles doing an acoustic version of Eternal Flame…
We did it all again the following year (2020) with a night of romance headlined by Mr Romantic himself, John C Reilly.
Then, of course, the Pandemic hit, and we ended up relocating to Sydney for 2021. That was the point when we officially formed Weirder Together as a company and brand, and decided to launch the variety show at the Giant Dwarf Theatre (R.I.P.) emulating the vibe and format of the Largo shows. We did 3 of these shows and never announced the guests. Each event became a surprise who’s who of Australian music and comedy legends.
These nights were really legendary. Cameron James, who recently released a single through Weirder Together Records, was on The Project telling his story of debuting his song Medium Dick in front of Russell Crowe at the first Weirder Together night…
When we got back to LA, the variety show went on hold and we started hosting intimate house concerts at our Laurel Canyon home. Joanna Sternberg, Ninajirachi, Amyl & the Sniffers, DeepFaith, Jena Malone…
Now we’re back in Sydney, and we feel like it’s the right time to bring back the Variety Show. As always, we promise huge talent, genuine surprises and lots of silliness.
